Some games we want to win. Others we want to lose.
I play recreational tennis with a group of guys at the 3.0-3.5 level. This means we are good enough to have a challenging game but not so good that winning is everything. Sure, we want to win, but we also want to laugh, enjoy the game, and come back as friends the next day.
There is another game we all play in and that’s the game of life. Winning and losing here is different. Winning often means more money, power, and stuff. But winning at this game often has a dear cost, and it’s the cost of peace, joy, serenity, and eternal life.
This is what the Bible has to say about winning and losing, in two thoughts:
For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me and for the gospel will save it. (Mark 8:35)
For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will find it. (Matthew 16:25)
Two games, intertwined, but with very different ideas about winning and losing.
Dwell on this.
